Summary:

In youth work for reconciliation, inclusion and intercultural acceptance in post-conflict areas, we’ve noticed sport can bring people together, as when playing a sport together for the same team, players are not focused on the interracial, interreligious and other differences between them, but are focused on team work. The CYSW4RD project through its activities addresses the needs of youth communities in partner countries and beyond to adapt sport work as a way to accept diversity and tolerance.

Objectives of the project were:

  • To empower youth workers in reconciliation youth work in post-conflict areas and using sport methods and creative large-scale youth sport work events for reconciliation through organising training courses
  • To provide insight into the operation of German organisations and institutions in this regard through study visit
  • To develop basis for knowledge management capacity building through production of intellectual outputs
  • To develop a community of youth workers for Youth SPORT work (YSW) for reconciliation

The project has been implemented successfully in all 5 partners’ countries:

  • 3 training courses in 3 countries (Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia);
  • 1 study visit in Germany;
  • a preparatory meeting, 1 youth exchange, and 1 evaluation meeting in Kosovo;
  • 5 local dissemination activities in each partner country.

The implementation of the project comprises of the production of 4 intellectual outputs – 3 guidebooks with curriculum of developed training courses and 1 handbook on organising large-scale YSW events.

The project activities consisted of the following activities:

  • A1 (CBY) Preparatory meeting: this meeting gathered a representative of each project partner to discuss the following steps for the project. This included the organisation and implementation of activities, preparations needed for each activity, participants’ lists for the mobility activities, information sheets for the training courses and youth exchanges, visa processes for participants, division of responsibilities and tasks for the production of curriculums and handbook, the implementation of local/national activities for education of youth workers, the evaluation meeting and dissemination activities.
  • Mobility activities – The training course and youth exchanges were based on the non-formal education (NFE) pedagogical understanding of the Council of Europe and the European Commission Partnership Programme combined with expertise of the trainers. The programme was adapted to the needs of participants and each working day consisted of 4 developed sessions of 90 minutes with 2 coffee breaks between and 1 lunch break, 1 dinner break and an evening programme. The methods consisted of NFE methods such as inputs and discussion, interactive exercises, guest speakers, group works and so on.
  • A2 (Mobility) Training course 1 “Reconciliation youth work in post-conflict areas”. Each partner had to send 5 participants for the training course, and the total number of participants was 29 for this activity.
  • O1 Guidebook with Curriculum for the Training Course “Reconciliation youth work in post-conflict areas”.
  • A3 (Mobility) Study visit “Reconciliation and youth (sport) work in Berlin” was organised for the leading coordinators and youth workers from all partner organisations in the project – 3 participants per partner. It consisted of different visits and knowledge for inter-sectoral cooperation and exchange as well as sharing of good practices in working with youth in (sport) work for reconciliation.
  • A4 (Mobility) Training course 2 “Youth sport work for reconciliation and acceptance of diversity”, 29 participants.

  • A5 (Mobility) Training course 3 “Creativity and Large-scale youth sport work events”, 29 participants.

  • O4 Handbook on organising creative large-scale youth sport work events: The handbook combines existing theories and definitions and gives practical advices on defining, planning, preparing, implementing and evaluating large-scale youth sport work events, with special focus given on creativity in envisioning new large-scale YSW events based on methodology of escape rooms presented separately as a section for better and detailed understanding. It consists of 6 chapters consisting of the following topics: youth work and non-formal learning, youth sport work definition, large-scale events, leadership and management processes in implementing large-scale youth sport work events, management as a process in large-scale youth events, communication, evaluation and follow up.
  • A6: (Mobility) Youth exchange “Creative youth sport work events for reconciliation”, 29 participants.
  • A7: Local dissemination events in 5 partner local communities served for multiplication of project knowledge, its activities and the presentation of 4 intellectual outputs. Each event gathered at least 20 youngsters and youth workers and lasted for 2 long working days.
  • A8 (Mobility): Evaluation meeting with representatives of all partners aiming to sum up the longer-term impact and results of the project and to develop further European level partnerships on youth sport work for acceptance of diversity.
  • Finalisation of the final reports by preparation team with inputs from contact persons.
  • Dissemination and reporting activities
